Veterans Disability Benefits in South Carolina
Beautifully nestled in the southeastern United States, South Carolina is proud to be home to over 400,000 veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) expresses gratitude to these brave individuals by extending several beneficial services and programs.
The Veterans Disability program is one important benefit, offering monthly compensation to veterans in South Carolina who are living with disabilities linked to their military service.
Understanding the VA Disability Program
The VA uses a rating system to measure the severity of a veteran's disability. Each condition is given a rating between 10% and 100%. The amount of monthly compensation a veteran receives is based on the severity of the disability.
To verify the disability, veterans usually participate in a Compensation & Pension (C&P) examination. This examination is conducted by the VA to help evaluate the disability and assign it a rating.
In cases where a veteran has more than one disability, the VA rates each condition separately according to the VA's Schedule for Rating Disabilities. The VA then calculates a combined disability rating based on a specific formula.
Eligibility Guidelines for VA Disability Benefits
To be considered eligible for VA benefits, South Carolina veterans must meet several eligibility requirements.
Both of these must be true:
- You have an existing condition, either physical or mental, that impacts your health, and
- Your service history includes active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training.
And, at least one of the following must be true:
- You incurred an injury or sickness during your military service that can be connected to your current condition. This is known as an in-service disability claim.
or
- An existing injury or illness from before your military service worsened due to your service — called a pre-service disability claim, or
- You have a disability that is associated with your active-duty service but it only manifested after your service ended. This is known as a post-service disability claim.
Keep in mind that the type of discharge you received from the military impacts your eligibility. An honorable or general discharge typically allows you access to all VA benefits, such as health care, education assistance, and housing support. However, a less-than-honorable discharge might make you ineligible for benefits.

How long does it take to be approved?
Typically, the VA takes about 3-6 months to process a claim, depending on the specifics of your situation.
Appealing a Denial
If your VA disability claim is rejected, it's time to file an appeal. To do this, you need to fill out a form called the Notice of Disagreement and send it to the VA. The deadline to appeal is one year from the date of your denial notice.
Include important information like your medical records, related documents, and any statements that support your claim that your disability is connected to your service in the military.
To win your appeal, you must provide evidence that your disability is connected to your time in the military.
